They shed average most of the year. However, when they the spring comes, they shed a lot! Best thing you can do is brush the dog daily. This should keep the mess from the shedding down to a minimum.

Actually most people don't know this but labs shed much more than a dog with long hair (example: golden retriever). Labs have a triple coat and goldens only have a double coat. So yeah they do shed a little more. All dogs do shed seasonally though. They shed out in the spring/summer and again in the fall/winter. A good grooming and blow dry should help get rid of most of the hair.

I recently just got a Yellow Lab puppy, 15 weeks. I have haddogs my whole life and even the short hair dogs shed. I have been doing TONS of reading about the breed before my purchase and they have a double coat and shed twice a year. A bit more as a puppy. Females will shed twice a year apparently it is hormonal. Males will have a big shed out in the spring and a smaller one in the fall. If the dog is brushed with a good brush then it is possible to minimize that undercoat.
Hope that helps.

Short Answer: Yes, they shed a lot.
Long Answer:
Labradors shed in seasons. They loose their summer coat which is smooth and repeals the water in the Spring. And they loose their winter coats which is hardy and thicker in the Fall.
During this time, you will find hair everywhere, and it sticks when it falls. It can get stuck in the crevices of your carpet, car interior, and clothing.
But they also shed out of season, just like every other animal.
The best way to minimize the fur you find on the floor is to brush and comb him every day!
If you spend just a few minutes brushing his fur out in it's natural flow, you will dig out any dead hairs and they will be in the comb instead of the floor.
If you commit one half hour to one full hour each week to FURminate him, you will be amazed at how much hair you can remove, and you will see the results in how little hair ends up falling after you groom him.
Also, using the Kong ZoomGroom when you brush, grabs the loose hairs and traps them in the brush.

And, no, the different color varieties of labradors do not shed differently.
I would rate the Lab overall as a heavy shedder. Same goes for beagles, pugs, pointers, and any other flat-coated breed.

Most labs shed year round and then have major hair drops twice a year. All my friends that have various labs always have lab fur dust bunnies in their house. Always. And yes, it's everywhere. If shedding is a problem, then a lab is not the breed for you. Sorry!

You will probably have to vacuum a couple times a week with a lab. They do have seasonal shedding when there will be more hair loss. Also, they shed a lot right after baths. Brushing them a couple times a week should help cut down on that. Feeding a high quality diet will help (i.e. Science Diet) and making sure they get fish oil and fatty acids in their diet helps (Science Diet has plenty in their food)
Good luck!!

I had a yellow Lab with a thick undercoat, and she shed year-round. It didn't matter how much I bathed or brushed her; there was always LOTS of hair. I got over it, though. She was the best dog I ever had.
