My family is used to larger dogs (siberian husky, lab, golden retriever, etc.). I just had a beautiful black lab die from cancer, and am thinking about another. I have a pretty dominant female lab/shepard mix, and need a dog that will be good with kids, and stay in the yard. Looking for experience from other dog owners.

I've been thinking about a labradoodle. No shedding? More grooming?

Go for the Golden Retriever again. I have had 3 and they all love kids. The long hair can be more work than a lab. We may get a Yellow Lab next - no kids.

I prefer larger breed dogs myself too. Right now I have a female boxer, who is a great family dog! They are very protective of children, and are good guard dogs, if you don't mind the barking when people come to the door.

I also owned a Chow-chow for 10 years, while the females are not such great pets, the male's are. They are somewhat loners, prefering usually one person in the family over the others, they too are also good with older children.

I have also heard that doodles, either labradoodles or golden doodles, are also great family pets. Good with children and good, obediant memeber of the family.

Good luck finding a dog that suits your family :)

Try an Akita. Very loyal, GREAT with kids. Of course it depends on the dog, but protective of the home. Dont need too much excercise. Big breed. Males 80-120 lbs. Just absolutely love the family. They dont bark unless something is wrong. Very clean, non-smelly breed.

And Im sorry for your loss. I have an Akita myself, and I can only imagine what you're going through.

(click on the link below and click the facts).. and do some research. Theyre a great breed.

DO NOT get a "doodle oodle" mix from "breeders" who sell them for as much as purebreds. get one from the shelter, they have many wonderful mixes, including poodle mixes, all needing a home.
DO NOT get a chow chow, they're rather aloof and independant and they often cannot tolerate the awkward movements of small kids. I took care of my friends' chowchow for one week when I was 10 but it attacked my other friend and we had to send her to the hospital.

Golden retrievers , flat coated retrievers and labs are great for kids, but they can also suffer from genetic diseases. Retriever or lab mixes are great in my opinion since they don't have nearly as much genetic diseases and are more common in shelters.

Ask the shelter for puppies, they sometimes keep them in a different area/room. Puppies get used to family life quicker and are much much easier to train.

good luck with your future dog:)

I would not get a husky. I love them and we've had them but they caused us more heartbreak than I want to think of. Retrievers are generally all great family dogs, so are springer spaniels.

Go to the humane society or shelter where you live and ask for their help. We've gotten the most wonderful dogs there. They test the dogs for things like food guarding, tolerance to cats and kids, and they are usually well house broken too. You can bring your dog and family and everyone can meet and see how it goes.
Their whole purpose is to make permanent placement of pets, so they want a great fit in your home.

It has worked very well for our family to get dogs from the shelter.

Well in my experience labs are the best with kids. I had a boxer when my girls were little and he loved them and protected them and I never worried about him being around the kids. He was the best dog with my kids but lots of people are leary of boxers in general.
If you have small children stay away from terriers and small breeds, they tend not to be very patient.
Good luck.

I'm in love with golden retrievers. They are great with kids.....we have found that males tend to be more family oriented and females will usually pick one person in the family. Happy dog hunting =)

I'll warn you about Border Collies. They are VERY active, aren't happy without having a "job", and should have lots of room.
I would get another Lab. Try one of a different color from the one you lost. OR...
After I lost my Lab, I rescued a greyhound. They need a completely fenced yard, must stay on-leash when out of the yard, and must sleep indoors... Mine is very loyal, likes kids, doesn't chase the cats, and is very well socialized. He is a great ("greyt") watchdog. You can find out more at fastfriends.org.
