I was just wondering if it be aight to do some research on buddhism and hinduism because they seem like interesting religions. I'm already a dedicated and moderately pious christian, but my conscience made me hesitate to check it on wikipedia. Is this blasphemous?

Yes, definitely you can!!! How can you tell if you have a good day, if you don’t have a bad day to compare with? How can I be a witness to world about Jesus right now, if I don’t have a different past. I can tell the world that I used to believe in Buddha, but Jesus changed me from my old believed. This means I already have some knowledge about Buddha religion. I can tell the world the different between Jesus and Buddha.
I have the book calls “ The Kingdom of the Cults” by Walter Martin. I find that, it is a good book to read and study about how the other people believe. How could you know how to be a good witness to God if you only have just a source and shield, but not a knowledge. Even if you have a full knowledge from God, you can not go farter to witness to the other believer. You have to point out the different of what your believe in and what they believe in. Even if they say they believe in God like you. You wouldn’t know how to point out the different. You pretty much have most of great response except the second response. How ever, I think he might miss understand your question. He would give you the right answer if you would ask, “Is it ok for you to seek an advice or believe in Buddhism and Hinduism as the same time that you believe in God? But you didn’t ask that!!! I think as long as you do the researching from what the other believe from the book or internet, and not start go to place that they worships in, and start worship with them, you are in the good shape. You are doing well.

How could you ever discuss Christianity with a Hindu or Buddhist if you didn't understand where they were coming from? Nothing is wrong with being curious or doing a bit of research as long as you keep a sense of skepticism. As much as some churches like to claim, God never asked us to follow Him blindly. Questioning doesn't make you blasphemous, it only makes your faith intelligent. When the world questions your beliefs, do you want to stare at them and mumble "Well, I don't really know why I believe it... i've just been told to/grew up that way/ or plain, I just do"? Or how awesome would it be to be able to give a coherent and intelligent argument for your faith?

However, I wouldn't trust wikipedia for a recipe for cookies, much less on something serious like this. Here's a link to a Christian bookstore that has some books written on this very subject. That way you can answer your questions and satisfy your curiousity through a Christian viewpoint.

Of course you are not blasphemous!

Most Christian denominations encourage knowledge and respect about other faiths. Some of the ones that only allow for salvation through Christianity (like the Catholic Church), however in the case of this denomination their teachings explicitly say that they don't reject anything true and holy in other religions.

At minimum, you will learn why people from other religions believe and preach a given belief system. If you are open-minded and in search of something more for yourself, you might decide to adopt practices from other religions that aren't at odds with yours.

At any rate, good sould searching!

It is a good idea as a good Christian to know at least the basics of other major religions. However, if you don't have a deeply rooted Christian faith it can be easy to start believing another religion. You must research other religions with the attitude of, "I'm going to learn about these other religions so that I can talk about my faith with someone from another religion, and not come across as a moronic know-it-all who doesn't know what he's talking about.

I agree, educated christians are always better than non-educated ones, =)
In my experience it is hard to slander or hate things that you are knowledgable about, the more you learn the more you will become understanding and accepting of the ways of different religions and cultures.
To truly love everyone as Jesus taught, would really mean to grasp and not judge different religions based on a right or wrong theory but to see what blessings each religion gives to the people who live it and need it in their lives.

I don't believe that knowledge in this day and age is ever blasphemous, especially if you think of it in this way: It is like researching all of things you would not want to say, think, feel, or do in order to deepen your precious gift with Jesus as a truely devout Christian!
So long as you keep Christ's Word in your daily life and as your 1st obligation I believe you are being faithful to Him.
In His Name!

Nope. Christianity preaches understanding and respect for all religions. Researching on what others believe in is not blasphemous. God put in us an innate curiousity and meant for us to use it. It's okay to widen your knowledge in the beliefs and cultures of others.

Im sure you already know this and are just making sure. You can approach can church leaders or search the bible to double check yourself.

Of course it is ok, when i was back in middle school, I attended a private lutheran school, and one religion class had us learn all about different religions...If you are curious definetly check into it, just because you research something does not mean you believe in it or are sinning...God knows what is in your heart anyway...
