I just rescued a kitty from the streets. Took him to the vet to have shots and get neutered.

I've never had a cat before. How do I know if he's purring as opposed to having a cold?

Thanks to all the kitty experts who will help me here!!!

ps. He's beautiful. Grey, black and brown when I found him.. Now white as snow, and not a spot on him.

Good for you and thanks for adopting a kitty. You can recognize a cat purr easily - sounds like a small refrigerator (rrr...rrr...rrr...rrr) coming from deep in their chest. Cats purr when you stroke them; when they are comforting themselves to go to sleep; or when they are pleased by something (eating their favorite food). When a cat has a cold, he/she will keep sneezing and sometimes the sneeze will blow a little clear liquid from the nostrils.

Congratulations on your newest addition!!! And thanks for rescuing instead of having it put down!! If the kitty is purring, it will be a continuous low rumbling. If it's a cold, it will sneeze, maybe even cough. There is a distinct difference. Good luck.
