Could be a couple of different things. If it's a hairball, it should come up. Could be an upper respiratory infection (kitty cold). Have you had her a long time or just adopt her? Has she been around any cats you don't know? Is she also sneezing? URI's are highly contagious and usely need antibiotics to get rid of them.
The other possibility is asthma. Is she struggling to breath when she does this coughing sound? Does she extend her neck out?
I would consult with her veterinarian before dismissing it as a hairball just in case it is something more. If she coughs up a hairball, then there you go. But it if continues for more than 24 hours and isn't resolving itself get her to a vet.

Could be coughing or sneezing. Cats get colds and upper respiratory infections too like we do. Or it could be a hairball. My cat hacks up hairballs once in a while and she's shorthair. Just watch the cat and make sure you clean up quick wehn the hairball does come up...not something you want to step on when you wake up! Yuck.

Some cats do get tummy upsets when they're not happy and they will make a weird sound. I know a cat that hacks and pukes when left alone too long LOL...he is very social and likes company, can't stand to be lonely.

Could be a hairball, could be asthma, could be something else. Listen to her breath, too. If it sounds labored then take her to the vet right away cause it could very well be asthma. My cat was diagnosed with having asthma when he was about 6 years old. He does the coughing occasionally, but then he gets some spurts where he is really having trouble breathing, gets listless, stops eating and drinking, doesn't purr or cuddle. We know that he has to go to the vet right away when that happens and he gets a steroid injection. Otherwise, he gets a lower dose steroid and a bronchodilater every day, in pill form. So, even if it is asthma with your cat, know that you don't have to worry about having her put down or anything. You will just have to treat her daily with prescribed meds.

Your kitty sounds as if she has developed a hairball-quite common with all cats due to cleaning their coats. She will either cough it up or if she starts developing continuous hairballs then you might want to change her diet to Science diet hairball control or Purina hairball control(less expensive) either way, this should help your kitty out with her problem-Good luck!

It's probably a hairball it's trying to cough up.

Or it could be your cat sneezing. My cat does that every once in awhile, it's funny how it sounds.

Usually it is them trying to hack up a hair ball, especially in long haired cats. On the worst case senerio, it can also be a symptom of heartworms. Being so young, that is really unlikely though.

Sounds like a hairball to me. She'll probably just cough it up.

Could be upper respiratory or hairball, or she could be reverse sneezing. I am a vet tech and see this a lot, take her for a check up and they will tell you. P.S. try a hair ball control food too.
