A poor man and his wife are worried about their crop because it hasn't rained, but have faith that God will send some. When the couple and their children are gathered having a meal, it begins to rain. The man calls the large raindrops "ten-cent pieces" and the small drops "five-cent pieces." They are happy until the rain begins to come down harder and they realize it has turned into hail. He then call the pieces of hail "silver pieces."

The hail destroys their entire crop. The man is distraught and that night, writes a letter to God, telling Him he needs 100 pesos to buy more seed and to help tide them over until a new harvest. The man takes the letter, addressed to "God," to the post office.

When the employee at the post office sees the letter, he laughs and shows it to his boss. The postmaster also laughs, saying it's the first time he's ever seen a letter addressed to God. Then, it touches his heart to know that someone would have such faith in God. They read the letter and the postmaster decides he wants to help the man. He asks the employee and other people to pitch in, but they're only able to collect a little more than half of what the man was asking for.

When the man comes to see if he's received any mail, they give him the envelope which is only signed from "God," the man opens it outside the post office while the others look on. He goes back in and asks for pen and paper and writes another letter to God that says, "God, of the money that I asked you for, I only got 60 pesos. Please send me the rest as I need it very much, but don't send it to the post office because the employees are thieves."
