Was watching a show called dexter and their was this scene where someone was killed by an insulin overdose, but their is nothing in a tox screen and they go on to explain that it is virtually impossible to detect unless... yada yada the usual bit, does this have any basis in reality? Im a big murder mystery fan and see this a lot, one would think that after death metabolism stops so any drugs in the system wouldnt break down? And if this is realistic why? or at least a textbook that someone with no pharmacology background would understand... been trying to look up the anwser myself and am only getting frustrated

some drugs have a very short half-life so they are hard to detect. many times drugs are identified by the metabolites which are the byproduct of the drug after it has been metabolized.

i don't really think drugs continue breaking down since the body tissues are dead.
