I live in a duplex apartment; the walls are paper thin and my next door neighbor is driving me batty. He talks loudly to himself and screams profanities very early in the morning and wakes me up. I'd like to put some kind of barrier on my side of the common wall, but I'm unsure what will actually buffer the noise. Someone suggested the foam egg stuff that you put on a bed. Whatever I put up as a barrier, I will cover with a nice fabric so the wall won't look so tacky. Thanks for your help!!!

your friend was correct, the thicker the better..thats what radio stations have on their walls. plus the fabric would really fem it up, for added insulation, hang velvet drapes on nice iron rods over it. geez now i wanna do that to my house.

one suggestion would be to put a fairly 'thick' piece of furniture on a portion of the wall that is not feasible to insulate- like a bookshelf or armroir. They have the insulation board that the others were talking about with a 'foil-type' covering on it. You can tack that onto the walls with some double sided tape, or just a few brads in the corners. also add the egg foam and cover with fabric using a staple gun. If you put the curtain rods up too it would help secure the board with minimal amount of nails/screws as most landlords frown upon that. You could also take it with you when you go if need be. the insulation board is pretty cheap about $10 or less for a 4'x8' of 1/2 inch thick. You can trim it with a saw edged knife or razor blade knife- if you need to trim around plugs, etc. It's super lightweight and easy to deal with. If you discuss this with your landlord - they may be willing to help out with the costs if you want to secure it well enough to leave it. It never hurts to ask :-)
p.s. corkboard is a good insulator too. You can get it in the 1'squares with adhesive on the back or in bigger sheets. Lowes or Home Depot.

I'd suggest styrofoam insulation board - available at any lumber yard. Usually used as an exterior wall insulation underneath vinyl or wood siding. Multiple layers are very do-able and would be very easy to attach cloth to.
