I use a 1 1/2 in barrel too. This is my curling ritual.
1)The night before, I wash with a volumizing shampoo or Suave Healthy Curls shampoo and conditioner. Go to bed w/ hair damp
2) The next morning, your hair should be dry and plug in your iron.
3) Texturize your hair with Garnier Curl Construct Mousse
4) Protect ur hair from heat damage with a serum
5) If you have thick hair, divide ur hair into a top layer and bottom layer and secure the top layer with a hair tie or clip.
6) FInd a good heat setting on your iron: thin hair:low number; thicker hair:high number, etc
7) start curling your hair in small increments/sections. Open the barrel and take a small group of hair and put it a the area on the iron closest to the handle. Slide all the way down to the bottom of the section of hair, and twirl up. Your hair should look like a spiral on the iron. Hold it there for 5-10 seconds. Release. Repeat this until you have both layers done. Also, to prevent burning your head, pull slightly away while your hair is in the iron. If you let the iron rest or relax, you could have a hot head! ;)
8) Now, ur hair might look like shirley temple, but no worries!
Use Garnier Fructis hard curl OR soft curl gel. Both work great. Squirt a quarter size in your palm and distribute through your hair. It will pull and loosen your curls slightly. After that dries(20 seconds), use a frizz defense cream, such as Dove Anti-Frizz cream. It comes in 2 different types of Anti-Frizz strengths. Smother your hair in that, and spray down any major flyaways. Use another mirror to make sure the back of ur hair is curly too, and that no pieces are sticking out.
9) Now, you are ready to go! You'll look fabulous! :)
Good luck!

I just bought a three barrel waver, and it makes awesome loose waves! It's quicker than using a curling iron, and less hassle. It doesn't leave unnatural indents, and I love it! My suggestion is that you invest in one of these rather than struggling with the curling iron.

ok this look is quite person-friendly. First you desire any style of hairspray and a a million a million/2 curling iron. Then separate your hair into 5 separate sections, take care of with clips. Take a factor and, take approximately an inch huge section to twist. repeat various how huge sections are. do this by using out section then spritz hairspray by using out section, do no longer spritz hairspray if curiously to curly purely go away it and get ready later. Repeat threw complete head. If this comes out too curly then turn hair around till you detect needed look. wish this facilitates and reliable success on the formal!
