Hi all...
I'm 21 years old and last week I found a lump in my breast a week ago and my doctor performed an exam today. He doesn't think it's anything serious, in fact he said that he believes it to be a fibroadenoma. Anyway, he scheduled me for a mammogram next week just to be safe and to have a baseline incase I should ever have another problem. I'm really nervous I've heard such horrible things...anyway does anyone have any words of encouragement? =) My husband can only say so much...I don't think he knows quite what it's like...lol. I would appreciate words, prayers, anything you have to offer. =) Thanks.

I just had a mammogram for the first time in my life, I am 55 years old. I have always been afraid of it because of everything people say about it hurting and being uncomfortable. I could not wait or escape the mammogram any longer, my breast were hurting like a burning sensation from the inside. My Doctor sat me down, and said this is it, you are going to have one. So I did, and believe it or not, it did not hurt a bit. You feel a little pressure but the ladies that perform this test are very compassionate. So my dear, get it done. I waited a long time and it could have been too late for me, but for the grace of God, I came out OK, and really, really it does not hurt.
God bless you, Boricua
p.s. I am top heavy and it was OK, I thought my breast would not fit in the machine, these are all the things that I was afraid of, and also they had told me that the bigger you are the more it hurts.. That is not true, get it done, and we will all pray that everything will be ok for you.
Another thing I forgot to tell you, when my sister and I were young in our teens, my mother found 2 lumps in her breast. She talked to us and prepared us for the worst. Well, she went to the hospital and they removed the lumps and they were benign. She is now 79 years old and still going strong, so not all lumps mean cancer it could just a benign lump.
I hope this helps you to keep peace of mind.

I found a lump in my breast when I was sixteen, before mammograms had been invented.

The doctor was sure that it was a fibroadenoma and I waited several months as a routine case. However I had to have surgery, with three days in the hospital, to remove it to be sure. Today I would be able to get a referral and drop into a mammography clinic to get checked out with nothing worse than a pinched feeling.

By the way, I never had another lump since!

I have found that the best time to have a mammogram is immediately after your menstrual period. Prior to your period, your breasts may be a bit tender, and that's almost always the reason for discomfort. If next week isn't the right week, and all your doctor needs is a baseline mammogram, waiting until after your next period shouldn't be an issue; contact your doctor to be sure, of course. I've had mammograms before (I'm 51), and other than having your breasts "squashed" a bit, there's really nothing to it. You'll do fine, and your mind will be far more at ease, so hang in there - you can do it!

Ok, I'm a doctor, and I want to say that your doctor is probably right, lumps in the breast of a young woman are most often completely benign and would never cause any problems (other than just being there) even if you left them alone forever. The reason your doctor wants to take a mamogram now (which is a smart idea) is to have a baseline to compare later mamograms to so in the future it will be easier to tell what's already there and is nothing to worry about and what's new and should be looked into more closely.

Hi Dabears..,

Mammogram is not bad as an experience -having had several.I think that people are just scared of the possible results.
Somebody said she feels as she is in the way -which is sort of a funny description of it but quite true.
After your periods is best as breasts tend to swell and be tender before menstruation -which is not a good time to put them in a machine.
You can take comfort -at least a little-from statistics. A country with excellent statistics and about 8000 new breast cancers in a year had NONE of these in under 25 year olds and about 10 in under 30 year olds -so young womens' breast cancers are VERY rare -which gave your doctor confidence to say that it is probably something else -as it most very likely is.
But -life is fragile-so take good care of it!
praying for you

ps. if you are curious, look at the website of cancer statistics -epidemiology. most (northern) European countries have excellent web sites and National cancer Institute, too -so you can check the statistics for yourself! feeding these words in your Google will give you several sites!
