A friend and I are looking for a piece to sing at a vocal solo night. The theme is musical theater, so preferably a song from a show. Thank you!

I am a soprano and my friend is either a soprano or an alto.

Tell me what voice parts each of you are, and I can get into specific songs. Otherwise, try these sites:

http://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/smdb/index.html (search engine for songs, put in duet, two females, upbeat or ballad song. I suggest upbeat since it's a better crowd pleaser for a "vocal solo night".)

http://www.musicalnotesnmore.com/ (after the synopsis of each musical there is a section with "Songs of Interest"; look for female duets that are described as "good of a revue", "crowd pleaser", "showstopper", etc.)

Examples:
"Come Play Wiz Me" from Anyone Can Whistle
"You're the Top" or "It's Delovely" from Anything Goes
"I Can" from Bajour
"Don't Tell Mama" from Cabaret (I think this solo could be split up nicely for a duet)
"Macavity: The Mystery Cat" from Cats
"I Know Him So Well" from Chess
"Class" from Chicago (a pretty crass song, but hilarious. Lower voices)
"What You Don't Know About Women" from City of Angels
"Marry the Man Today" from Guys and Dolls
"If Mama Was Married" from Gypsy
"I Don't Like This Dame" from The Most Happy Fella
"I'm Daisy, I'm Violet", "When I'm By Your Side", "Leave Me Alone", or "I Will Never Leave You" from Side Show (the show is about siamese twin girls, so there are quite a few female duets, go figure)
"Over Here!" from Over Here!
"Take Him" from Pal Joey
"Jealousy Duet" from The Threepenny Opera
"What Did I Ever See in Him?" from Bye Bye Birdie
"Stepsister's Lament" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella
"Ohio" from Wonderful Town (LOVE this song)
"What is this Feeling" from Wicked
"How the Other Half Lives" from Thoroughly Modern Millie
"The More You Ruv Someone" from Avenue Q (NOT politically correct at all, requires the lower voice to have/fake a thick asian accent)

That should help a bit. Good luck.

Some great alto/mezzo duets are:
I Still Believe from Miss Saigon
In His Eyes from Jekyll and Hyde
Take me For What I am from Rent

These songs are great for a belter
Stepsister's Lament from Cinderella is a comedic duet and very fun to act out. Some other songs that I highly suggest you check out are:

If Mama Was Married ~ Gypsy

Marry the Man Today ~ Guys and Dolls

What Did I Ever See In Him? ~ Bye Bye, Birdie

I Know Him So Well ~ Chess

Class ~ Chicago

A Boy Like That/ I Have a Love ~ West Side Story

For Good/What is this Feeling ~ Wicked

What you Don't know about Women ~ City of Angels

Marry The Man Today from Guys & Dolls.

It's a great song and if you put some good blocking to it has potential to be a highlight.
