Simple, the sun rises from the east and sets in the west, so you stand with your right arm pointing right to east, your left arm pointing left to west, so then you must be facing north and behind you will be south, and by the way thats not just in Australia, North is North everywhere. lol....

There is more to this than meets the eye. When I was in the cub scouts I was told that lichen grows on the shady side of trees, south in the southern hemisphere. However where I lived, dry, tropical, the trees did not have lichen. Another fact is that in the north of the country in summer the sun is close to directly overhead between say 10.30am and 1.30pm so using the shadow of a stick of the hands of a watch was virtually useless. So the only quick way is a compass or maybe a GPS system which is a lot more expensive. In the south the other methods work better.

I dont get it. Is this a sarcastic question?

Same way the find north anywhere. With a compass and a map, or by using the sun.
