As a previous Jeep Grand Cherokee owner, I can vouch for that great engine. Lots of torque, dependable, and after 270,000 km (180,000 miles) it was as good as new. My only complaint was the fuel consumption and maybe a bit of valve noise which seems to be present on all of these 4 liter Jeep engines..

Now for the second part of your question, they are hard to find because most car buyers seem to think that V8 engines are better, so the manufacturers just produce what they can sell. All in-line sixes seem to be good engines, why aren't the "Big 3" making more of them?

I have had 3 Jeep Cherokees and i have a jeep grand Cherokee now (2002) and my first one was a 1990 and had 265k miles on it the second and 3rd where both 96's and the first one had 290k miles on it and the 2ned had 198k miles so i know they last forever and they have plenty of low end torque and great off road while getting about 20 mpg's

The 4.0 motors have 7 main bearings in them. The heads are very strong and even if overheated rarely need replaced ( head that is ) in other words the engine is pretty strong...1 bad point I use to see when I worked on these...is the radiator was small and on some models it was dang difficult to fill with coolant and get the air out. Before I'd put the radiator hoses on I would fill the block etc. as much as I could to help this which worked great. Hope you find 1.

you can't find one because they last forever, I am the second owner of a 94 jeep cherokee with the straight 6 4.0 engine, i now have 234,000 miles on it and its still going strong, knock on wood. just stick with the 2 wheel version and check the door hinges, older models tend to break loose from the body at the hinge and is not cheap to have welded back on unless it hasn't rusted at frame. look in your local want ads for a used one owner jeep cherokee, or grand 94 and up to98. although they all seem to be hardy and trustworthy, this is a newer version of dodges straight 6 of yesteryear.

I would rather get a Jeep Cherokee instead of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Grand Cherokee's are less reliable than the Cherokee's.

ok look at it this way. the 4.0L is bullet-proof. it will last way beyond 300k miles without any major problems if maintained. the newer the engine, the more horsepower and torque it will have (my 91 comanche has 190hp stock). it was the fastest engine in its class in 88 and again in 91. they are easy to work on. have quite a few mods that can get it near 250hp if desired. i can go on and on about how great this engine is. it is highly liked by anyone who knows anything about engines. even people that do not like jeeps will agree that the 4.0 is one of the best engines ever made.

I own a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same engine and its got 190,000 miles on it. They are very reliable engines if they're taken care of i.e oil changes and maintenance on schedule. They're surprisingly really good on gas I get 26-28MPG on mine and its full time 4WD. They will go anywhere and tow anything.

in a nut shell the straight six will last longer than the others is easy to work on and virtulley bullet proof if maintanced and taken care of but it too will eventually wearout or blow up if mistreated may have to go to a older year model to find it dont think ford chevy jeep or chrysler make a straight six any more they take to long to wear out

i own a repair shop, and the good part about these engines is they last a real long time, that's why everyone likes them,,they,ll easily go for about 3-4 hundred thousand if taken good care of,,but that's probably the best engine jeep has ,good luck hope this help,s.

tons of torque and last about forever. they are dinosaurs because they are so long. take up too much room. car makers are looking for smaller and smaller components to make cars smaller, but the same or bigger inside.
