there aren't any specific laws or gestures given to internet sites.
they do mostly what they wish. The most organized, usable, user friendly sites are the ones that are going to be used more. an example is www.google.com and www.yahoo.com.
the parent should monitor what the kids do on the internet, especially at a young age. they should also give them suggestions and warnings in online web surfing. Then again the parent shouldn't be a "camera" that monitors the kid's EVERY move, unless the child is very young.
Then again we are responsible for not posting gruesome questions or answers unless they are scientifically, appropriatley, and proportionally stated. That is why the "yahoo team" added an abuse button. Unfortunatley people ABUSE the ABUSE button.
So both the PARENT and WE, not to mention THE SITE, are responsible for what children see or read.

Parents.
They should know where their kids are going and what they are up to. To avoid this is irresponsible behavior on the parents part. They can keep their children from reading this by not giving their kids access to the Internet.
Now. This does not mean that society should not hold any responsibility. But I think when it comes to children it is truly the parents responsibility. You had it. You raise it.
Same thing with Howard Stern. It should not be his problem whether or not a kid hears his show. It is the parents. Stern never held a gun to any ones head in order to make them to listen to his show. (that I know of.)
And I think Howard is a smut. But he should have the freedom to go on the radio and talk about almost anything he feels like talking about. (I am talking when he was on FM talk.)
It is up to the parents.
You had it.
You raise it.
I take my own responsibility and try not to post anything that would be offensive. But, that is just me.

Their parents. People on this site don't need to go out of their way to do anything for anyone else... This is the internet and there's no way for everyone to try to protect a child from things they might see. That's the job of the parents. There are people of every age on here, and they can't all bend what they want to say for a small population of children. If the parents are worried about what their kids see on the web, they need to monitor, and then tell the child what they can and can't do online.
But of course, if people on this site (or any site for that matter) are going out of their way to post innapropriate content, then that's different, and should not be allowed.

Their parents are responsible, but I am also responsible for what I post on here. I am careful not to make reference to anything that would upset a child and yes, I do report anything that could be construted as directly sexually at children...not that anyone cares, certainly not yahoo. I have considered leaving as more and more its just trolls and others out to hurt people and I really do not care to be a part of it. Still, there are some people with good intentions who can share intellectual exchange.

Parents are ultimately responsible for the safety of their children. They wouldn't walk up to the stranger on the street and ask them to come over and babysit that evening. Letting kids on the internet with out some supervision is the same thing. You let strangers from all over the world into your home and give them access to your children.

I think we should be aware that there might be children on the site so we should be careful about what we write eg profanity or lewd pictures, but if parents don't like the content, they should restrict their childrens'access.
I know my grandson eners this forum sometimes

In my opinion, it's BOTH. Even as I post my blogs, I keep in mind that children (though not very young ones) may see my blogs. This does not hinder me from giving the hard truths - it just makes sure my page retains integrity and respect. This is a very good question you posed - it gets people to think. God bless you.
