No other Gods before me means exactly that. To covet is to wish to have the possessions of others. It goes beyond simply admiring someone else’s possessions or thinking, “I’d like to have one of those.” Coveting includes envy—resenting the fact that others have what you don’t.

The key here is the word "before", and includes anything you worship more than God,(literally one could assume the commandment is about other Gods, and what denotes other Gods,), but hey TV, money, power......

Covet, means you want, almost in a sly or even sub conscious manner it sur passes the word envy, it is something that will twist the soul.

The answer is yes and yes.

Covet is to want what others have. Keeping up with the Jones. It means not to put anyone or anything before Him. Think of Him first in all things.

Jennifer, the first one means that you shouldn’t put anything before God. Not other Gods, not hobbies, not a favorite rock band, nothing.

Covet means to desire with envy. No, we are not supposed to obsess over what other people have. Think about this. If a friend has something that you really want and you start obsessing over it, pretty soon you are going to build up resentment toward your friend that she has it and you don’t.

You should not have any other Gods before me.....means that you should not put anything period before God. Money should not be first in your life, a nice house should not be first, having the best of anything should not be first, not one man made image or made up god in our heads should be first, you should not consider yourself first before God.

You shall not covet...Means that we should not want what others have to the point of trying to possess it more than we want God. The two kind of go hand in hand. We should be content in all things but at the same time not put anything before God.

I hope this helps,

Matt

"You shall have no other gods before me" means just that. Other Gods can be Fake God out there and can also mean what man will take on as a God in his life, like money, gambling, success, booze, drugs, whatever he feels is more important than anything else in his life and becomes everything to him..
"You shall not covet", means you shall not envy, be jealous, or want what belongs to another.

The first one states that there is only one God and no others We can't love and serve 2. The last takes all the laws and makes them a matter of the heart. Even as Paul states that the law is spiritual so is the correct obedience. We are to obey the commandments out of love for God and for our neighbor. If we do not kill our neighbor but we hate him we have not kept the commandment.

Most certainly, we must not believe in any other "god," but believe only in God Jehovah, and his Son, Jesus Christ. For Jehovah is truly the only real God, and the creator of all things; including me, you, and everyone else; as well as every thing. There are many people who believe in, and bow down and worship statutes, in many parts of the world. You can read in the Old Testament of the Bible, and find many examples of such. Try reading in the Book of Daniel, and you will see how the king of Babylonia tried to make the people bow down and worship the statue that he had built. But it was only a statue; built of wood and other such products. How much can a stick of wood do for you; as far as having any supernatural or spiritual powers? Nothing whatsoever! But realize also, that we can allow anything to become a god unto us; if we put it first in our life, rather than allowing God Jehovah to have first place. For example, many people allow their money to be their god. Their money means more to them than God, or anyone else. When we allow it to go this far, we are allowing our money to be our god. When the Word of God tells us that we shall not covet, it is basically telling us that we are not to allow a desire for earthly things to become too important to us. We are not to be in love with earthly things. In the Lord's prayer, it tells us: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." In other words, we shall not be in need at any time, if we fully trust in the Lord. If we truly serve the Lord, and He has first place in our heart, we will not be coveting every thing that we see. It does not mean that it is wrong to ever have a desire for a certain thing. But "things" should not have first place in our heart.

Yes, you can only worship Jehovah God.

Covet means to want something that someone else has. It's about being satisfied with what you have and not trying to "keep up with the Joneses". Just live your life and be content.

The 1st Commandment means, not to worship idols or false gods. (That could mean many things)

Thou shalt not covet means, not to consume yourself in possessing what another person has. Coveting is unproductive in that you find yourself unsatisfied with what you have (material possessions, abilities, appearance, etc...) and also the possibility of stealing another's belongings.
