Specifically, what is the optimal height for framed posters and paintings?

It would be the same as the optimal height for any wall hanging...average eye level, or slightly higher. If you have vaulted ceilings, and your entry point has a good view of the entire wall, you can go higher with it, but sometimes that makes a room feel cold. Bringing wall hangings down to slighty above eye level makes a home feel more comfortable and warm. The biggest thing to remember is to maintain movement of the eye as you scan around the room. If you have low things on either side, raise it up a bit. If you have higher things(a window, etc.) bring it down a bit.

The posters should be hung at the heigth that they will be viewed.I.E., if they will be hung in a hallway, that people will be walking through, then they will be hung at a standing up eye level. If they will be viewed while sitting down, hang them at this eye level.Most people make the mistake of hanging things too high on the wall.

Try Blue Tack .... you can put little bits of it along the poster edges and it won't mark the walls or the door. Stronger than double-sided sticky tape
