I love to rn. when i run i feel free. but when i tell myself i am going to run today i feel scarced. scarced of what i don't know. but when i force myself to do it i love it. i want to know, if 3 times in my neighborhood is a mile, and all i can do is 2 times around, can i train myself to run 3 miles by April? is that possible? i was thinking that everyweek i can try to do one extra lap and then the last week i can just run that mile. like there are 4 weeks in january, so i can run 2 laps this week, 3 laps next week, and just pratice runing a mile for that month. then increase that way for the other months. i am doing this for my track team.

It is definately possible. Let me tell you something my father (who was a track star) told me: Running is all in your head. Your body completely capable of it, but you must push past the mental restraints. "Oh, I'm tired. My side hurts. It's too far" You can do it. You will do it. Just keep with it, and you will make it. Everyday, just a little farther, even if it's a couple extra steps. You will condition your body (and mind) to run those extra miles. I'm a lot like you- I get scared... but when you do it, and see what you're capable of- there's no stopping you!! =) Best of luck to you!

Okay, I ran for 5 years on a track team, and cross country team, then I coached cross country for 3 years. This is what you do... You don't push yourself to run a full extra lap, and if you do, not just once a week, because your body wont stay use to it. First and most importantly, pace yourself, stay at one steady pace the entire time, slow or fast, and don't walk. Also, you need to do a little more each day. Maybe run two laps, then a fourth of another one, then the next week run two laps, then a half of another, then the next week, run the entire 3 laps, and then, try doing 3 and a half laps, so then, your not cutting yourself short by only running a mile, do a little more depending on your race for your track team. any other questions you can email me at dixiexccoach05@aol.com Best of luck.

YES. That is a very good plan. I am Captain of my high school Cross Country team. We have run 763 miles in our last season of cross that spanned about 4 months...It was intense...but over the summer we started of at 2 miles...then the next day we went to 1 mile...then 2 so that week was 31313 saturday and sunday we rested...then 42424 then 53535 then so on and so fourth....it was good because the off day like tuesday was always less...and only adding 1 mile didnt seem like a lot......we got up to 10 miles and it seemed like nothing...then we hit the 14 milers...well....i dont wanna keep blabbing on...i could talk all day...FACT OF THE MATTER IS......I LOVE RUNNING

I believe it is possible. I think the best thing that you can do is to get a training partner to push you and make the run more fun. I think a rule that I use to do was to increase my miles by 10% a week. Good Luck with running and have fun.

Tara is right. It is all mental. You need motivation, whether that comes from you, a coach, or a friend (training buddies are very helpful) As difficult as it is, to ensure you get the work you want done, you need to ignore that voice that says "I'm tired...I hurt...I can't do this..." And believe me, it feels really, really good when you know you ignored it. I'd recommend listening to music while you work out (loud, fast music- no pink floyd, please!) I find it helps you concentrate on something other than how tired you are, you can't hear yourself breathing (sometimes it sounds a little scary) and if it's a fast song, you'll find yourself running in time to it! Good luck.
