Since this question is in the running category I am going to have to say Kenenisa Bekele from Ethiopia.

He is the world record holder in the 5k (indoor and outdoor) and the 10k and is the reigning champ in the world cross country championship race in the long and short course.

I have posted the world rankings list here:
http://www.iaaf.org/worldrankings/index.html
Just click on the event you want and you will find the corresponding
world no.1 in that event and by which gender.
If you want the overall rankings, then it's Asafa Powell for the men,
and Sanya Richards for the women at the present time.

Xavier "Pee Wee" Carter. He's a track runner from Palm Bay, Florida, near me. He got a football scholarship to LSU to play wide reciever. He quit football after his sophomore season and that track season in the NCAA championships he won all the events he competed in, all events were in 20 minutes of each other 2 were back to back. I believe it was the 400m, 200m and 4x200 relay. He then dropped out of LSU to go pro in track (this is best athlete not including brains right :) ) He then this past summer challenged the world record holder in the 400m to race him in an international meet. He won and (atleast at the time) held the world record.

Believe me this guy is amazing. I saw him play football for Palm Bay High a few years back. All they had to do is send him on a fade route, have the qb put the ball up and its TD.
