I spoke with my vet regarding that very issue. First, not knowing exactly what kind of worms the cat had, the vet needed a stool specimen. I believe that over the counter worm meds only work on round worm, IF they work at all. If the cat has fleas, chances are it may be tapeworm, and you can only treat that with meds from the vet. Skip the cheap treatment that won't work and reach into the litter box with a scoop, and take the specimen to a vet.

There are TWO safe ones...when directions are followed.
The first treats TAPEWORM ONLY. It is called TRADEWINDS and is gotten at the feed store or a good pet supply store. It is a tablet and is dosed by weight. It is a ONE TIME dose. (if tapes are a problem, they have probably come from fleas and you need to treat for those also.)

The second is a liquid that can go by many brand names, it is pyrantel pamoate. From the vet it is called STRONGID. It is available at pet supply stores by other names. The active ingredient MUST be pyrantel pamoate. It is also given by weight, at least TWO doses, 14 days apart. This treats ROUNDWORMS and HOOKWORMS.

All of these can be give with or without fasting. You can also get the same medications through the vet.

Pyrantel pamoate is STRONGID.

TRADEWINDS is DRONCIT at the vet.

AVOID any wormers by Hartz, and any that contain piprazine. It does not work as well, and can cause side effects.

Praziquantel, the active ingredient in Droncit, is now available as a generic for the treatment of tapeworms. It works by making the worm's host defence break-down and the cat's body largely digests the worm.

If you cat has tapeworms, whose proglottids look like rice grains on the butt, I'd highly recommend getting some praziquantel at a pet shop.

some can, but they can be dangerous and sometimes outright fatal. Vet dewormers are the safest.
