Okay, so I'm 25 and I've decided that I'm going to finally loose all this weight I've aquired from being sick. I know that from previous weight loss adventures that counting calories works for me, but i always really kept it low and I now know that it was bad for me to do that. I'm 5'4" and currently 217 pounds. I want to at least loose 40, if not 50 pounds. I don't have a whole lot of time or resources to work out, but I do walk to work, which is little under a mile from my appartment. I heard that the way to figure calories is to consume 10 calories for every pound that you weigh. Is this true? If it is, what then from that should I start subtracting from the intake so I can loose this "beer" gut that I've aquired?

LET ME TELL YOU THIS.
a guy your age should consume about 3,000 calories a day if you are going to workout. you should start crunches, nice and light. don't over work your self, you might get hurt. you shouldn't have to count calories though. and if you are you should count the calories from fat. it's not the calories that are giving you that "beer gut", it's the carbs, salt, and fat. you should not buy things if you don't read the food labels you won't know if you are eating the right foods! you should always read them that's why they are on their! Good luck

To lose serious weight, try consuming 1200-1400 calories per day. A good way to do that is cutting out fast food, fried foods, and processed foods, especially meats. I eat a lot of vegetarian "meat" products and it seems to be helping me to shed pounds. Also, try running as much as you can of the way to work, then changing into your work clothes from running clothes when you get there. Good luck! Stay motivated!
