if it is truly for a good intent, your god will forgive.

The law does say that bearing false witness is a sin and Christ taught he is the truth and the way and the life. Seek the truth and you shall find it. I'm not sure what your religion is some teach that a lie is permissible in certain instances. As a Christian I believe we are all sinners saved by the grace of God through tha atonement provided by Jesus Christ this does not take away from the law but brings us grace and by faith we now have the power to be new creatures.

I don't like any kind of lying, and I believe we should always try to avoid it at all costs.
I would try to think of a way to find the answer by not lying.
There is nothing more precious than a friend or boyfriend that is 100% honest, I would go as far as saying I would marry that honest person. Because honesty is so hard to find.
If you are always honest you will be so loved by your friends and everyone for that matter.
Its never OK to lie, honesty is a cherished trait that is rare to find, but once found is priceless.

The Bible says, "thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor". It does not say you should never lie.
If you are lying to help you do something that will help someone, as I believe you are in this case, it is not a sin. I would advise you to write something on your homework worksheet to "remind" yourself of the answer you get, and then what you ask will not really be a lie. You will just be doing "extra" work not assigned, and I believe God will like what you are doing because you are doing it for the purpose of giving someone a gift that will make them happy.
If you go to court and say someone stole your laptop when you really dropped it into a lake, you would be bearing false witness against your neighbor, and that would be a sin, and I think you are intelligent and honest enough to know the difference.

I think your intent is in question. In your example, since your lie would be exposed after you bought the gift, I don't think so. It is kinda like a joke. Lies are things that are meant to deceive and stay that way. Yours is a temporary deception.
In the Bible there are examples of people who lied and were comended for it. Rahab, the prostitute who hid the Israelite spies and misdirected the soldiers that came looking for them.... I think about the people who hid Jews and helped them escape from the Nazis. There are times when you do seem to have to lie. In these two examples, the people being lied to were enemies of God's will. It is our duty to first obey God, then our government. Never should we choose against God's will.

Yes.
If you feel the need to lie even for a good reason you should search your thoughts for a way to tell the person why you need to know in a respectful way without telling them a lie.
You should never feel you need to lie.

No. And NEVER tell your wife she's fat. I don't care if she weighs 600 pounds--you still tell her she's skinnier than an Italian model on Atkins. Besides, I don't think there's any virtue in hurting a marriage by telling the woman she's fat.

Yes, it is a sin. Jesus died for all of our sins, for the small and big ones.
