Three men decided to split the cost of a hotel room. The hotel manager gave them a price of $30.

The men split the bill evenly, each paying $10, and went to their room. However, the hotel manager realized that it was a Wednesday night, which meant the hotel had a special: rooms were only $25. He had overcharged them $5!

He called the bellboy, gave him five one-dollar bills and told him to return it to the men.

When the bellboy explained the situation to the men, they were so pleased at the honesty of the establishment that they promptly tipped the bellboy $2 of the $5 he had returned and each kept $1 for himself.

So each of the three men ended up paying $9 (their original $10, minus $1 back) totalling $27, plus $2 for the bellboy makes $29.

Where did the extra dollar go?

The bellboy's $2. is included in the $27. that they paid, since they only got $3. back.

They paid $25. to the hotel, and $2. for the bellboy. That makes the $27.

It should be each of the three men ended up paying $9 totalling $27 MINUS $2 for the bellboy which makes $25.

We have to be careful what we are adding together. Originally, they paid $30, they each received back $1, thus they now have only paid $27. Of this $27, $25 went to the manager for the room and $2 went to the bellboy.

that doesnt make any sense. The men paid $30. They got $5 back. (25 now) they gave the bellboy $2. ($27) they kept $3 for themselves. ($30)

The 3 men paid $10.00 each for the room which is $30.00 total. The room price was supposed to be $25.00. The bell boy brought back $5.00 to the 3 men. Each man kept $1.00 and gave the bellboy a $2.00 tip. So each man paid $9.00 total. Three times $9.00 is $27.00 total paid for room and tip. The $9.00 includes the room price and the $2.00 tip. The price paid for the room is $25.00 plus the $2.00 tip equals $27.00 total which matches 3 times $9.00 each paid and the $27.00 total that was paid. There is no extra dollar involved.

Then how does the riddle get you to think that there is an extra dollar?

The riddle states that the men ended up paying $9.00 each for the room because they each got $1.00 back which equals $27.00. This is NOT true. The catch is that the $9.00 each man paid includes the $25.00 paid for the room and includes the $2.00 which they tipped the bellboy. So the $25.00 they paid for the room plus the $2.00 tip equals $27.00 which is what they paid.

The riddle incorrectly ADDS the $2.00 tip to the $27.00 dollars that each man paid and then subtracts the total from $30.00 which makes no sense. The $30.00 has nothing to do with it.

When you add $2.00 to the $27.00 total the men paid you get $29.00 as the total price they paid but they only paid $27.00 total. They originally paid $10.00 then got $1.00 back which is $9.00 paid by each man. Three times $9.00 equals $27.00 not $29.00.

25/3=8.333333 they each paid for room in the end
8.33+1 they kept =9.33333 x 3=28+2(bellboy)=30

Okay so each of them paid nine bucks nine times three = twenty seven plus two from the bell boy equals.....

what ? This is sooo confusing , tell me the answer! I Wait!! I think I get it! Okay,
So firstly they pay the guy thirty bucks right? Okay so he has all thirty dollars. Minus 5$ from the refund. so now the guy has twenty-five dollars. BUT he gets two dollars back from being honest which makes twenty seven plus the three ones from the guys and 27+3= 30!
