First of all, God has no physical image for us to be made in. Instead, Adam and Eve were made in God's internal image. They could think and reason unlike the animals, but were perfect and sinless, just as God is. Then they went and screwed that sweet little setup and their children and every other human being that followed them was an imperfect image of God. A warping of a perfect portrait if you will.

As for Neanderthal Man, even if he was for real, and not a hoax as the poster above me said, why couldn't he be an extinct species of ape that was smart enough to surpass today's chimps and gorillas in terms of intellect, but at the same time this same intelligence deprived him of some of the survival instincts that today's apes possess. With this trade-off he became extinct. This is purely my speculation and I reserve the right to be completely wrong.
