I'm talking about the bell that goes off when you ride your vehicle over the hose at the gas station - how does that system work? I have tried researching this but couldn't find any legitimate answers. My guess is that there are two wires inside the hose the touch each other when the weight of the vehicle rides over it, thus setting off the bell...but that's a pure guess.

It is done with air!

You connect the hose to the bell and cap the other end of the hose... the weight of the car going over the hose causes a plunger in the bell to move, striking the bell causing the ring.

My guess is that hose is sealed off, kept under a certain amount of pressure and when you run over it the pressure increases and pushes against some sort of sensor that sets the bell off
