1st mistake: You probably did not go and view the car did you? This is an investment, one of a beginning of large decisions. Sadly people are not aware that a photo is worth a million bucks, but seeing a car in person is worth not going bankrupt for it.
2nd mistake: Being that its eBay things will take longer to get things done if it is possible for ANY reimbursement.
3rd: Did you read his Terms and Conditions? Normally they all state AS-IS stating that once bought, its a binding contract with buying the car. eBay is a place to get deals as well as pieces of absolute junk.
If you could provide a link to the eBay listing it might help us understand what exactly you CAN do. Go to the top and add a detail and find the website URL of the auction. Even though the auction is expired, it is still viewable. Or email me and I will see what can be done.
Good luck whatever you do.

Your son bought a used car. Unless there was a written warranty, it was sold as-is. As-is means just that. Your son may have paid too much for the car, but this is going to be a lesson in life.
Have any car checked out by your own mechanic prior to purchase!!! If you are bidding in an auction format, and do not physically inspect the vehicle prior to bidding, then it is your own fault if there are problems!!!

If the bill of sale states 'as is' and the seller didn't commit any fraud then I'm afraid your son has just learned another life lesson. Whenever I sell a car I make it VERY clear not to come crying back to me if anything breaks once it leaves my driveway. I'm certain this will be the sellers attitude concerning your son's car.

Unfortunately he probably can't. Most are sold as is and you have little recourse. If it was a flat out false advertisement you might be able to work with eBay/Pay pal on a resolution but it won't be easy. If it is someone who does allot of business on EBay they will have an incentive to seem fair but if the ad says as is they won't have much obligation.
Good luck

i mechanic for a living, and I'm afraid you have no recourse you can take on a deal like this,,i have a friend who also bought one off e-bay,,and its a lemon also,,on the final sale there's a disclosure that says the car was sold as is,,unless stated by the owner,,and I'm sure they didn't warranty it,,but the only way to come out ahead on a deal like this ,is to repair it,and drive it,other wise all he has already spent will be a total waste,id just fix it and drive it,,its a bad deal,i know,,but this is all you can do about it,,i have tried to warn a lot of people about e-bay ,and used cars,,but they wont listen,,I'm sorry he got a bad deal,,but he,s not the only one,,maybe it can be repaired and drove some,,good luck hope this help,s.

wow that's messed up, try to solve the issue with the seller if possible & look over discription & see if they list that it has problems or see if they put as is in description. I hope u can get this resolved. I like ebay for some things but sweetie after this always buy car u can test out b4 paying for it, that is how dishonest people get u. Make it so bad I'm trying to be a ebay seller , but not for something huge like that. I hope u can at least get something back . If nothing happens , contact ebay & get a lawyer if they didn't describe it as you bought it

He can't. As with any vehicle purchase, a thorough inspection by an independent mechanic is necessary. Even more so if you are buying sight-unseen on eBay.
If you can't afford to travel to the vehicle and inspect and drive it as well as have it checked out by a qualified mechanic you should NOT buy on eBay or any other auction site.

getting a car from an auction site and it not being local is risky. he's now stuck with a lemon. u could try reporting it to ebay, but it might not do any good. leaving some bad feedback on this seller might raise a red flag to the next 'sucker' they try to hook.

I don't think so. It is an auction. There is no guarantee what you get there and he(the seller) did say used.
