Most metals are excellent conductors. Some, like silicon are semiconductors. Google that term to see what it means. most organic compounds, like wood, skin, rubber, carpet, plastic, etc are very poor conductors called insulators.

Layman's terms: metals have only a few electrons in their outer layer, and so let them go freely when others come along to replace them. Insulators like rubber or glass have their outer shell almost full of electrons and so grab and hold on to any passing through, preventing current flow.

With sufficient voltage, *anything* will conduct electricity (except a hard vacuum). Metals are good conductors, most other things are not. Water is strange because most water has dissolved ions which conduct electricity very well; absolutely *PURE* water is a poor conductor.

my dad's an electrician, and all of the wire that he uses is copper, so I'm assuming that that's the best, or at least most cost efficient conductor.
