My daughter is in a program called the Young Marines, and in order to move up in the program, the kids are required to do at least 50 hours of community service per year. She is 9 years old. Does anyone have any good suggestions as to what would be a good community service project for a 9 year old?

I would suggest working with your local volunteer center to find some opportunities.

My local volunteer center has volunteer projects for children as young as 5 years old. Many projects require the children to be volunteering with a parent or guardian. Some of these projects include: Helping with food packaging at the local food bank, doing arts and crafts for local worthwhile causes, helping feed the homeless at the local shelter, grooming animals at the local animal shelter.

You can find your local volunteer center at:

http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm

If there isn't a volunteer center in your area, try the United Way:
http://national.unitedway.org/

By working through your volunteer center, you can also get the appropriate documentation of your volunteer hours as well.

Good luck!

i'm sure she could do things like litter picking, and i'm sure the local old people would appriciate having a little girl come into the home to talk to them or sing. she could also assist in bag packing at a supermarket, but at 9 years old this is hard as there isn't a great deal she can do unsupervised-which means it has to fit in with your timetable. wish her luck for me.

this may not exactly qualify for 'community service', but i work for the human rights group Amnesty International, writing letters for political prisoners. it can be done in small groups as well as by ones self.
