If you want to go Active Duty...it will be harder. It cost the military more if you have dependents. The National Guard is different though. You will NOT have to sign custody over to someone and they don't care how many you have. Yes, it is typically one weekend per month, two weeks per year, but there are always chances to be full time. I know....I had three children when I joined and have been active duty ever since.

If you have more than one it will be tough. The only way you'll have a chance a getting a single parent waiver approved is to make sure you have a solid custody plan for that child that will probably include giving sole custody to someone else while you are in your training; all your training. Plus that plan needs to account for the possiblity of you deploying. Also how you are going to support that child. i.e. do you have money already saved, how will the guardian afford this, is there child support from somewhere... All those things will steer you into or away from a pair of boots. It's gotta be rock solid.

Good luck.

Single parents can not join the Regular or Reserve Army (not sure about National Guard). No waivers will be considered. Not sure about the other services, check with those recruiters.

I'm not sure about the other branches, but the Air Force will let you have 2 dependants. you don't have to "sign" over custody of your children, you just have to have a family plan in place (your recruiter will help you) that basically gives gaurdianship to another party to take care of your children while you are in basic and in tech school. the Air Force is very family friendly. However, the Air Force deploys just as much as the Army so you will have deployments.
