Only one thing? Well you didn't say this would be easy. Actually the answer is, but the implementation, now that's another story. As a nation of individuals with the freedom we have (suppose to have anyway), we all have a huge responsibility to be informed. People vote on issues in every election that have no clue as to what the question is, let alone what the best answer is. Others vote based on the selfish self interest. Education has been mentioned several times, and is an important ingredient to the issue at hand but is only a portion. The rest of the answer is to somehow get everyone off the couch watching mindless hours of sitcoms and drama, and get them truly interested in this country. Know what every issue being discussed in our State Houses and Washington, and know enough to make an intelligent assessment. Does that mean we we all agree? Of course not, but the final answers will be thought out and more than likely be closer to what we really need.

64 people answered ahead of me, and only 2 of them had their head on straight. Ending abortion by making it illegal is first and foremost our most pressing issue. The wholesale slaughter of innocent children in the womb make issues such as the environment, healthcare, etc. pale in comparison.

Only 2 people had any compassion for innocent children. The rest have been dumbed down and brainwashed by contemporary society that tells them that a spotted owl is more important than a human life.

The nations hands are awash in blood and people are concerned about things that do not matter. When over 95% of the respondents are foolish and blind and cannot see that abortion must be stopped, it gives me very little hope that people will ever wake up from the stupor induced, zombie-like trance that the liberals have put us in for over 30 years.

We need to pray more than ever before. We need to pray for the little ones whose lives are being snuffed out today, that they may join Jesus and our ever-virgin Mother Mary in heaven and enjoy infinite, blissful peace in the arms of our Lord and Savior.

Buy Mexico and make it the 51st state.

Well, you didn't say to be realistic. But wouldn't that be great?

We'd have those great beaches and the natural resources... maybe we'd conserve them better. There are no mazatlans in Mazatlan any more (deer). The fish are depleted and not protected. Polution from old tech industry is ignored.

So many of their people have to come up here for work when they'd really rather be able to live with their families and make a living at home. Let's adopt them all under our flag!

(I know this would never happen)

The top thing I would definetly like to change is the way all politicians act. I mean why is there even political parties like the Democrats and the Republicans? Americans should have stayed away from those pointless "partys" because they cause much argument and also some people now only vote for a person just because they belong to their party and not for their facts/suggestions/or things they will change.

The prison system. If a person is a proven serial killer--instant death penalty. If at 3 strikes you are out, then a lifetime of community services. Bring back the chain gang mentality! People in prison can lift weights, watch TV, learn for free, do nothing if they choose, have/belong to gangs, etc. Plus, they get 3 hot meals, a warm bed, and other benefits that free people, some poor and some not as poor, do not have. I think China has the right idea...you get caught stealing--say goodbye to your hand! Brutal, but effective. Low crime rate and all that.
Put them to work building houses or other equally supportive think for OUR COMMUNITY. They obviously took something from someone/something....let them repay it. Why house "people" who are too dangerous to be with the population?
Sorry I'm so cynical, but it's hard to be in a free land and not be free to be safe...so sad, really.

Find a way to get rid of substance abuse. Too many people are on drugs and unable to get rehab because most people are unable to afford health insurance. Because of the addictions that have taken over, people will do what their addiction says, to get money for the drugs.

This will reduce Violence, Robbery, Assaults, Children being neglected due to parents using, unborn babies being affected, etc.
Hospitals and Doctors should help patients wean themselves off of medications, but they are the biggest drug pushers.

I would get rid of the Patriot Act. It would allow us the freedoms that we were guaranteed in the Constitution. In fact the Patriot Act should be challenged in the Supreme Court. If you can pass a Bill that allows you to change the Constitution then next week instead of taking away warrant-less searches they may take away your freedom of religion or speech. Think about it.

forget religion and other personal preferences, that is what makes America the land of the free.

To change one thing, you have to take many steps for it to work.

I would concentrate on our own homeless and deprived. I would focus on that income level and make higher education easier to enroll. Provide incentives for employers to higher those who are in that income level and going through the classes to get hands on training and some income. Drug tests and grade levels would be required to stay enrolled. It isn't much, but a start.
There are other things I would do for our own, but you asked for one.

Find a way to get along and do away with the thinking that first thing you need to do is sue someone.

It would make folks accountable for their own mistakes. We made it through about 150 years without all this suing.

The jury system. Let's face it--the average American is not capable of sorting out the information dished out in most trials. It turns out that, instead of weighing the evidence, most jurors rate the lawyer's performances. It becomes nothing more than a sideshow and, often, justice is not served. The answer? Not sure, but maybe a system of trained judges, who would sit as a panel, could render professional and non-biased judgments.
