For me, neither of the above. Sure, I do them as soon as possible, but only because I see no reason to wait. I always try to manipulate my withholding so that I come as close to even as possible. I usually end up somewhere between owing $50 and getting a $50 refund. Never did understand the people who get all excited over a big refund. Think about it. Say you get a $1200 refund. That is $100 a month you could have had on your take home pay, every month. Don't know about you, but I could use an extra $100 each month. If nothing else, it's weed and beer money. And, what good does it do for the government to hold all that money for you? They don't pay you any interest. You'd be better off putting that $100 into a savings account, collecting interest on it, and then, withdraw it, and you would have more than you put in. Refunds are a scam.

Just my two cents,

Because I AM an Enrolled Agent licensed by the IRS and US Treasury Dept. to prepare taxes Federally and for any of the 50 states...I am anal retentive. Thus, I usually do my taxes in the early part of February so that my refund comes in time for me to pay my first property tax bill due on April 10th. (I usually pay things early too).

Now that you all want to clobber me for being so darn anal retentive...I want to say....I love, absolutely love, the controlled chaos of tax season and I can't wait for all of the 'fun' to begin.

Yes, now I'm running...running away very fast. LOL
Guess what, I do also read IRS audit manuals for fun in addition to having the tax sites listed on my favorites and the continual learning that comes with preparing tax returns is a RUSH!

I usually love to hurry up and file because with 2 kids I get a fat return.
But this past year I won a trip on Live with Regis and Kelly and will have to claim it as taxable income.
So I'm a little scared to file.
