I heard you're supposed to have a rooster in your kitchen, but I don't know the reason - is it for good luck?

Yes, it is a symbol of fertility and of course which comes first the chicken or the egg question... (The Rooster comes first!)

lets play balderdash:
On the french country side farmers were poor, so the barn was connected to the house as a way to save time in milking the animals and for providing warmth during the colder months. Also, the castle owners of the property, needed payment - rent for the property, so the farmers paid in livestock, and the only way to have the payment ready at the time the collectors came, was to have the chickens already in the kitchen.
When the farmers moved away they made wooden replicas to remind themselves of the hardships they once faced. Now they no longer had to pay their dues with their livestock, and thus- the rooster in the kitchen- a reminder of days long gone.

If there were a rooster in my kitchen it would be in the pot! It sybolizes different things in different countries. I believe americans adopted it from french country decor however it is out of style this year overseas but americans are about 1 year behind when it comes to international decor. It symbolizes wealth in most places.

you should not have a rooster in the kitchen unless you live on a farm.
