He had the role of "step Father". Joseph, if you trace his lineage back, you find he was a descendant of Solomon's line. This line was for the Kings of Israel, therefore Joseph would have been king if they had not been subject to Rome. Jesus gets the title "King Of Israel' from Joseph, His step father. Mary's lineage goes back to David's son Nathan, the half-brother of Solomon. Jesus therefore is of the Tribe of Judah, of the linage of David and His claim to be Jewish is confirmed because He has a Jewish Mother. (Rabbinical law says "the mother of a child is proved by wittiness of the birth, the father of the child could be any one's guess.) That's why if a child has a Jewish dad & a Gentile Mother, it is considered Gentile & must convert at maturity. One other thing not widely known is that Solomon's descendant Jachoniah, was told by God "none of your lineage will sit on the Throne of David." Even though "Lawfully" Joseph was entitled to the Throne, he couldn't because he was of Jachoniah's lineage. Jesus could be Lawfully King because He gets the Title from Joseph, and is not in the line of Jachoniah.

He was and he wasn't. This is an article of faith. If you believe in God, you also believe in his power to do his will on earth. Now Joseph may not have been Jesus' biological father in the normal sense of the term. This is unless you also recognize the power of the Holy Ghost to do mysteries and wonders. You can see this in the scriptures very clearly in Matthew 19:26 and Mark 10:27
"...With God all things are possible". If you are trying to present this as a contradiction in the Bible, you are mistaken. You are, at first, assuming that Jesus was just an ordinary man. Upon a further check, i see that you are a Jew. Why don't you read Matthew 27:25. Would you crucify him again??? Why don't you drop it. If you don't believe, leave others alone who do. I thought that this was a valid question until i saw your profile. Go troll another subject.

Jesus was the seed of David in two ways. One spiritual and the other literally a decendant. You ask about Jesus' father but have neglected to know of his mother by whom the heritage is passed down. How is it that you say you are Jewish and you don't know this simple thing. You quote scriptures and don't know what they mean. Jesus was the seed of David because of Mary. Although Joseph's lineage can also be traced, it would make no difference except to maybe those who would doubt the virgin birth.
Then the spiritual heritage. The God of David, the God David served is the same God who ordained Jesus.

Joseph is the father by marriage to Jesus's mother and he is not his father biologically. Jesus was David's seed because Mary and Joseph were descendants of King David.

You have posed a good question. You have got me thinking I know. I hope someone comes up with a good answer. I know Jesus was born of a virgin and that He was born of the Holy Ghost. Maybe He was from the seed of David and Abraham because of Mary instead of Joseph.

Joseph was the adoptive father of the child Jesus. Joseph was not the biological / genetic father of Jesus.
Joseph's fiancee (later his wife) Mary provided the human genetic material which allows Christ Jesus to be an actual hereditary heir of David who is entitled to sit on the throne of the Davidic / Messianic Kingdom.
