OK, I bought my car in July of 06. Somehow on between getting the car and the way home I lost the title. I do still have the bill of sale. The man I bought the car from never titled the car, he bought it from adealership who never titled it. I called the dealership and they acted like they didnt know who they got the car from, or didnt even rememer the car. How do I find out who the car was last titled to? If I cant get a title the car is pretty much worthless? Please someone help me out here. Can I search the VIN number and find out who had it titled last? If so where do I do that?

You bought a car from someone who couldn't deliver the title? How stupid is that!!? Odds are you bought a stolen car. You can't even junk it without a title! (Hint: A private party cannot reassign a title without titling it in their own name. Only a dealer can do that!)

If the seller never titled it, about the only thing that you can do is try to apply for an abandoned title. The procedures vary from state to state, but all states offer that type of title under one name or another.

I've done it in CA and TX. Both times it took over 6 months to get a clear title and I could not drive the car or motorcycle until I got it.

If it turns up stolen, it will be confiscated by the police and returned to the rightful owner. I know a few folks who have had that happen.

if you go to a motor veicheil station you may get a form to file for lost title but you would need to know name and address of person you bouth it from and have him put it in writting that you bought the car from him or have him give you the name of theoerson that he got it from
or you may look it up on car fax but that may cost around twenty dollars.
I did that once to find out a bout a car that I was frauded on.
there I got a lot of information and did calling and found owner and how many times it wasserviced and where it was located.
