We are looking at getting a cat and some of the cats we have seen online have a line under them that reads "this pet has been altered". What does that mean?

It means a female has been spayed, and a male has been neutered. ( they will no longer be able to produce kittens0 Which is necessary,as there are toooooo many unwanted cats in this world.

a cat who is altered is meant to be either spayed or neutered. Fixed is another term used for alters too.

Spayed = hysterectomy (removing of uterus and ovaries)
Neutered = castration (removing of testicles)

Whichever way you meant it, the animal has been neutered/spayed which every dog and cat should be if you do not want puppies or kittens or them running away or peeing all over your house!
