Humm, not sure which one is true:
-Hearing loss associated with OM is always conductive and temporary
-Hearing loss during OM may adversely affect cognition and language

Both are NOT true, apparently. Thanks.

Go with hearing loss during OM may adversely affect C& L. When ever a blanket statement is used exceptions will render the statement false. "Is always" can be disproved by an anomaly, whereas " almost always" is not as exacting (restrictive).

Previous answer is very good advice. Add to that experience. My 2nd son suffered severe hearing loss due to OM until he was 3 1/2 . His language development was seriously delayed. He simply could not hear well enough to mimic. It would stand to reason that it would effect cognition as well.

Once he had an adenoidectomy and "tubes in his ears" his language did light speed jumps in development. In just six weeks his language acquisition went from tested age 18 mo - tested age 6. The surgery was done when he was not yet 4.
