I know kicking and prouding are used, but in a case like a rottweiler or even a bulldog latches onto a limb how do you get them to let go as I've heard that they get quite determined about not letting go (re: incident with a dog and another dog loosing a limb). Is there a pressure point that you can't hit to make them release the bite? I volunteer at a shelter with strays, just curious in case this happens, what I should do.

I don't know of any pressure points you can use. However, I do know that the best thing you can do is NOT STRUGGLE! The more you struggle with the dog the tighter it will grip. Struggling may also cause the flesh to tear around where the dog has you as he will also start flailing his head! You should be telling him in a determined voice, "NO", "STOP," or "BAD DOG!"

I use to work with Rottie Rescue for years. I never had a problem with a dog latching on, although I had been nipped once or twice. Most of the dogs will strike out in fear or nervousness, not to attack.

If somebody is near you, then tell them to take a nearby water hose that works and hit the dog on the behind. If there are no hoses around, just try to hit the dog with water ASAP. That will most likely get the dog away from you. If the dog still won't let go, then ask someone to help pry the dog's jaws open. If nobody is around you, then I suggest using a shock collar before you get bitten, just in case, but it hurts the dog, so I think you should use it when the dog is very vicious.

i reckon a few hard jabs to the nose hey if it works on sharks.
if that don,t work try sticking your fingers into it nostrils hey dogs gota breath 1 way or another.
if that don,t work RUN because it won,t
want to attack the other dog no more it will be coming to loosen your limbs instead.
but hey at least it ain't attacking the other dog no more right.

If a dog is latched to you and it's grippin' for life, you can take your hand (the one that's not being bitten, duh) and shove your fingers in the back of its throat. Its natural instinct is to gag, and it's not harmful (versus kicking or beating it).

And I volunteer at a shelter too (: Good luck
