Cirrhosis of the liver is caused by various things, like hepatitis viruses, toxic exposure to chemicals, acetominophen (tylenol) overuse/overdose, alcoholism, etc. The liver becomes severely scarred and can no longer perform it's functions effeciently. Some people can live with cirrhosis for many years; others will progress to a more severe form of cirrhosis called decompensation. Those with decompensation will most likely need a liver transplant. Hopefully your family member will be one of those that just needs to change lifestyle habits and monitor with a good specialist. Best wishes.
