You're going to pay a high price for a DC hotel. Your best bet is probably going to be staying in Falls Church, Vienna, or Arlington, VA. Do a little research, and get a place near a Metro station. Then you can take the train into the city each day.

We stayed at the Quality Inn Iwo Jima in Rosslyn (Arlington), just across the bridge from DC in Virginia and right next to the Iwo Jima Memorial and close to Arlington National Cemetery. The Rosslyn metro is a few blocks' walk (uphill; the Rosslyn neighborhood is very hilly) away. The hotel was reasonable, clean, and had a little restaurant across from it (MacArthur's) that served great breakfasts. I should tell you, though, that this was about 6 years ago.
Whatever you do, make sure you stay on the west side of DC or in Virginia. Most of the major tourist attractions are west of the Capitol building, and the more unsavory neighborhoods are those in northeast and southeast.

I'd recommend the Days Inn, in the 4500 block (or so) of Connecticut Ave NW. There is Red Line metro about 2 blocks away, free parking onsite, and it is a nice neighborhood, out of the hustle and bustle but still with restaurants and so-forth within walking distance. It is also fairly affordable and one of the nicer Days Inn properties. The Arlington hotels are great too but if you look into that area, make sure your hotel is either within walking distance to the Metro or offers a free shuttle; some of the Arlington hotels are a very, very long walk to Metro and it's not always easy to tell from a map!

Check out: www.hiltonfamily.com and look at Embassy Suites who is part of the Hilton Hotel family. They have quite a few around the D.C. area. Three years ago my husband and I stayed at the Embassy Suites Old Town Alexandra. We loved it because it was reasonable and right across the street from the Metro! Right around the corner has Joe Theisman's restaurant.
The best thing about Embassy Suites? You can easily sleep at leat 4 people! To me it's the best deal for families. All rooms are suites! You can request 2 queen beds in the 'bedroom' plus the sofa in the living room pulls out into a sleeper! Better yet: free breakfast buffet! And I mean BUFFET!!! A full spread, not like a continental breakfast at all. You can even get cooked-to-order omelettes! Then to top that off; a night evening manager's reception! My husband loved it! No matter where we were, he insisted we be back at the hotel at 5pm SHARP so he wouldn't miss out on free cocktails/beers and snacks! So for families, one meal is taken care of each day. And than Happy Hour for the folks! Soft drinks/popcorn/nuts are available for kids during Happy Hour.
And most Embassy Suites have COIN laundry machines!!!
Have fun!

The Arlington area of Virginia is very close to DC - a short cab ride or metro ride away. By using some of the travel sites (hotels.com, orbitz.com, etc.) you may be able to find a number of hotels in DC whatever your price range.
I'd highly suggest staying near the Mall (if staying in DC) as it provides easy access to all the Smithsonian museams which are not to be missed! Most neighborhoods in the NW district are very safe and where I would direct my own family to stay.

It depends on your budget. When I lived in Washington DC I had on occasion groups of family/guests that would travel through, these are some of the hotels I recall them staying at.
If you like extra space without breaking your budget consider the following:
The Churchill Hotel (DC), Washington Suites Alexandria (VA),
Carlyle Suites Hotel (DC). All of these hotels are located within walking distance to the nearest metro station.

Make sure to look at Arlington,Va it is family friendly provides easy and fast access to D.C (just a short ride on the metro), and is a safe place to stay. Also don't know what airport you are using (or none at all) but close to every airport except BWI. Its a neat semi-urban place convenient for sightseeing in our nations capital.

Pentagon City is nice. A little pricey but convenient to the National Mall, shopping, dining and movie theaters. Tysons Corner, VA is also nice but a little further outside the city.
