My 3 year old son has a fever of 100.7 and is laying around for 3 hours. I gave him tylenol but hasn't helped him it seems. What should I do for him?

Also, he hasn't gone to the bathroom (number 2) for almost 3 days now...is this normal? Is this related? Any suggestions please....Thanks in Advance

CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!

If your child doesnt have a bowel movement for two days, a doctor should be called. When you add this fact to a fever it is definitely time to call your pediatrician or take your son to the emergency room! Dont wait until morning. Call the office right now (the on call doctor will be referred to you) or take him to the hospital!

You dont want to start medicating him because you could cover up symptoms that are important to know about. See a medical professional first.

I would give him Motrin instead of Tylenol (I think it works better). Give him a tepid bath. Not to cold , not to warm. Make sure you keep him hydrated (clear liquids, water , white grape juice, pedialyte). There is a bug going around or it could be strep throat. If not better in a day or so take him to the doctor. Some kids don't go (number 2) on a regular basis. My daughter will take 3 days or say in between bowel movements. I don't think it is related.

Call your pedatrician or the exchange. Only they will know for certain what to do. I wouldn't worry about the fever, it's not that high, but if it gets up to 101 I would give him Motrin. If he noramlly does #2 daily(each day) then I would worry, but he may just have the beginning symptoms of a cold. If he is constipated give him some water and massage his tummy 3 inches below the naval. I would still call the nurse though, just to check!

Hi,
How much did Tylenol you give to him? Please remember the dosage of drug whatever you want to give your child depends on the WEIGHT of the child not on age.
Another important factor while thinking about the sick child is " How sick he is? Because a child may be messing a lot, his or her cot may be full of stool but if he is taking feed, drinking water and playful, he is not much sick.
But if he is lethargic, lazy, or restless, then he needs immediate attention.
Grade of fever is also important but you cannot rely on it. Mild fever can jump to sky high causing fits or seizures. Or mild infection may prove to be sever septic shock if not treated in time because immune system is not well developed.
What is the reason of constipation? Why he is not eating? How much did he eat last day? If less than half of the normal food, he is sick and needs attention.
Motrin, if child has Respiratory Infection should not be given as it can cause breathing problem or exacerbate them. Panadol is prefferable untill you reach the doctor.
I want to correct some myths here. " Giving brown sugar and water"....It is causing or inducing " Osmotic diarrhea". it means instead of treating the real cause, you are introducing another disease to him.
Similarly, giveing fibre or roughage diet is not appropriate. He or she is child, its not the constipation caused by drugs or old age or imporper function of intestine as it does in adults.
Constipation must be ruled out. In childern, constipation is very important sign of underlying disease while in adults it is not as important. It may be due to some intestinal obstruction either mechanical or due to other reason.
I would have been in better condition if you have mentioned few other things like, any sneezing, running nose, pain in belly, any problem during pee, any feeling of nausea or vomiting, or any past history illness.
Better If you take him to a doctor or walk in clinic rather than depending on traditional recepies.
Children are like flowers of garden, any mild disruption in normality can lead to adverse situations. Adults are able to handle sever stress of disease and are able to explain what they feel and how they feel. Child only communicate through his or her gestures or body movements. Only skilled and trained personnel can determine the underlying pathology.

Your concern is genuine. Take your kid to a doctor, or hospital. Even if nothing is serious. I hope doctors understand parents concern. None will say to you why did you bring your child here.
It is also necessary for your own satisfaction.
I wish I would have been present here before to guide you.
Good luck...don't worry...your child will be ok.
Regards:

he is probly laying around do to not feeling good. and he probly is constipated but that shouldnt cause a fever. he might be coming down with a cold or something. as long as he eats and drinks i wouldnt worry to much about him not feeling good. but maybe you could get him to eat some raisin bran to help him go to the bathroom and give him some apple juice to sip on. if he doesnt feel like eating try to keep some crackers around for him to snack on. but i would try to get him to eat some raisin bran i have 2 kids one 7 and the other 2 when they get constipated thats all i give them its alot easier on them than an enema or any thing else. and i am pregnant and thats what i eat when i get constipated i guess the all the fiber. but if his fever gets higher than 102 and cant break the fever id take him to the er you can wet a wash clothe with cool water and place it on his fore head to help break the fever he probly wont like it but it works. and they say you can double up on tylenol and motrin if the fever gets to high but id call and make sure exactley how and the doses before doing that tho. just to be safe

You can give motrin every 8hrs with the tylenol which is every 4-6 hrs I believe, for the fever... as far as constipation I'd try suppositories they have them for babies/children.....if that doesn't work then I would go see a doctor, if the fever gets higher with vomiting go to the hospital! Good luck
