I swear I have been so traumatized and had to put up with so many Bipolar mean..and I do mean mean/evil people.I do feel sorry for people with mental illness....but I find that people who suffer from just Major Depressive Disorder or depression NOS are not near or even in the same planet when it comes to being mean/evil like some of the people I know who are Bipolar......Although I must say that some of the people I know who are Bipolar are not all mean spirited...Is it just the personality of the person?

Someone in the manic stage of bipolar disorder really has little or no concept of what they are doing to others. For that matter, they frequently have little or no concept of what they are doing to themselves as well. It's possible to be so high in a manic state as to have a psychotic break. I've seen it firsthand, and it's scary to be on the sane person around when it happens.

However, in the depressive state or in a mildly manic state, they are different people. Again, I've seen it firsthand.

It's not the personality of the person but the personality of the illness. And people are not their illnesses.

Does that help?

i have bipolar and if we come across as mean sometimes it is because we are frustrated. Think about it like this. For a few weeks you are depressed then things level off and you finally feel like you are getting things done. Then low and behold that feel good feeling gets even higher and before you know you are crashing again back to depressed and not getting much done. The up and down rollar coaster really puts a stopper on any real plans and can be a let down especially when things are changing all the time and you can keep up with them. So I would think anyone under these conditions would be a little pissed off.

I have had many boyfriends and girlfriends and family members with bi polor disorder. I have found that bi polor disorder causes people to lash out or be selfish, self absorbed or self centered and don't care about hurting others till its too late. Then when they are out of the episode they feel bad. Its like 2 distinct personalities that fight against each other and other people. I feel bad for them and have put up with way more than I should have. I go to counseling and take meds for clinical depression from abuse all my life from childhood on up. I have ptsd too. So when I am around bi polor people who go off it scares me. Even if they can't help it. Its not safe. There has to be more help out there for all mental illnesses. More understanding, more coping skills, more professionals, more research etc.

just because someone is bipolar does not mean they are an evil person. also everyone feels depressed at some point in their lives. bipolar people come from all walks of life and have a multitude of different personalities. i don't understand why you would think people with bipolar are deficient in the personality department? unfortunetely there is a lot of bad people in the world. what makes them bad? usually circumstances and upbringing/socialisation. having the attitude that bipolar people are all mean is very very narrow minded. it is a very outdated opinion of mental health. also, how do you know that every evil/mean person you have met is bipolar? this to me would suggests that you have known a lot of bipolar people in your life. i have a friend who is bipolar and they are lovely person. i suggest you read up on mental health and educate yourself. i'm sorry you have met some mean people in your life. you deserve better. it's a shame that we have to go through life meeting thoroughly unpleasant people. it's just life i guess. what i try and think about is my values. look to spend time with people with similar values and beliefs. also to remind you again that mental illness does not define someone.

.We aren't all mean or evil. When I'm in a bad place because my meds are not right I tend to be reclusive but I have never been told I was mean, in fact the opposite. My Shrink says I need to put myself first more often. Maybe you are looking for 'mean" in people? I hope you find "nice" in people and no one else hurts you.

i have been very hurt by a bi-polar friend who lashes out at me a few times a year, but the other times she is a remarkably lovably and amazing woman. the bottom line is that hurting others shouldn't be acceptable, even it's its due to a condition. it is wise to recognize that there is cause and effect when it comes to everything that we do and lashing out at others due to an illness is no exception. if any of us lash out with negativity to others, it's mature to recognize that those people have a right to create boundaries around being your friend.

People with bipolar have no idea what they are going to feel like from day to day and this increases their frustration.

You have to understand the disorder. Its not people are like that by choice, they are just literally not okay in the membrane. Bipolars, when they are in their high mode, tend to be very uncaring.

If they did not have bi-polar they most likely would not be that way. It is mostly the ones that are not taking their medication correctly that have severe mood swings. My friend's Ex-husband was very verbally abusive to her, spent money like crazy, and basically blames her for everything.
