So this isn't the greatest topic... sorry :) But my Lab is 7 months old and she hasn't yet pooped today. Normally she goes twice a day. I've read in other yahoo answers that something like a spoon of canned pumpkin or yams in their food will help. Is that true? Anyone know something better. Anyone with tips from experience would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

She didn't eat anything she wasn't suppost to. There's nothing within her reach for her to get. And I would never give her people meds... or any medicine for that matter unless prescribed by the Vet. Since it's just the first day I figure it'll run it's course. I just thought I could try something to help her. Of course if she hasn't gone by sometime tomorrow I'll definatly take her to the Vet. Thanks for all the wisdom so far!

No Humane Medicine.

Yes, Pumpkin from the can is great but you may have to give more than a spoon - like maybe half a cup or more.

Give the dog lots of water and walk her a lot too and she will poop.

If she does not poop then take her to the Vet tomorrow because it means she is impacted and they can die very quickly from that. She might have eaten something that is caught in her digestive tract.

Labs will eat anything and this frequently causes heartaches

Yes canned pumpkin works quite well for both constipation and the runs. Just make sure it's the plain pumpkin and not the one with all the added spices in it for pumpkin pie.

I give my little Shih-tzus about 2 table spoons, so a lab would probably need at least twice that amount. It works great for mine though when they have a poo problem and pretty fast too.

Never give a dog people meds unless directed by your vet! Constipation is a symptom of an under lying problem. Not enough fiber in the diet is the easy one to fix. If the pup ate something to cause a blockage is one of the tougher ones. I would let my vet decide what route to take. If it turns out to be diet related you might want to change to a better food. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. If you are feeding her dry dog food...which tends to cause constipation with young pups sometimes...try giving her a can of dog food, instead. The water content should loosen her up...so to speak. Otherwise, just try restraining the food a little and make sure she gets plenty of water. That will also help. In the meantime, I wouldn't go to any extremes. If it has only been today, nothing major is wrong. See how she is tomorrow before giving her anything that will really make her run for the great outdoors!! :) Hope this helps.

Canned pumpkin can work wonders. For a good sized pup like this, I would give about a third of a can. Just plain pumpkin, not with the spices, etc for pumpkin pie.

Make sure she hasn't swallowed a sock or something . Does she try to poop? If she isn;t trying or straining then maybe she just isn't ready... Also, if she doesn't appear to be in any distress a good walk in the woods/park or some tennis ball retrieving may get her to go.. Is she excessively thirsty?? you need to keep your eyes open for symptoms.. hopefully all will be well. and make sure she didn't sneak a poop in when you weren't looking...good luck

HI, please dont give laxatives if you dont have to. First try giving her a spoonful of flax oil or vegetable oil at each feeding, this is a natural way to help her 'releive' herself. Alteratively try butter.

pumpkin is for the "runs" your pup needs to be on "pro-biotics"
this will gently regulate the pup. also i love this kibble by NUTRO "lamb and rice" causes great shiny coat, small but regular waste, and no skin issues. ! and pro-biotics and enzymes for great digestion for life. for a "quick fix" try a tablespoon of olive oil.
