I had one as a kid and I can only describe it as a crude torture device. There was a "key" thing that you had to insert into a slot and use it to tighten the thing thereby expanding the palate. It's a real pain in the butt and I can remember getting food caught in it constantly. The water pick is my best advice for dealing with that problem. I can definitely sympathize with you saying that it's annoying.

I agree w/Brian C. I had one of those too! A wicked man's torture device. A chamber that held food up in the roof of my mouth in which i had to make annoying sucking noises to get it out. I cranked that puppy more then i was supposed to, to make the process go faster and had a nice gap between my front two teeth just in time for Picture Day at school. I am forever scarred by the whole thing! :)

Oh I had one of those, I did feel it tighten when my parents turned the key, and then it would loosen until the next time they turned the key. It really helped too, but I got big gaps between my teeth before the braces then closed the space later.

yes i do, they're for when you bite, the bottom braces won't fall out. On Jan. 16 i'm going to get them off, thank god.
