Regardless of citizenship, you'll need your passport to enter the UK. Depending on what country you are a citizen of, you may or may not need a visa.
US Citizens don't need a visa if they're staying for less than 90 days. If you're staying for longer, you should check the UK embassy to the US's website, and check the consular section for visa requirements. Same goes for any other nation to make sure a visa is or is not required.

I'm assuming by this question it means you are an American citizen. If so, then yes, techincally, you only NEED your passport. I don't know if there are any citizenships that the UK requires a visa for, but I have friends who are living in the us (legally) but have to be careful about leaving the country or entering another country because of their country of origin.

Passport definitley and not required but make sure to bring is your medical insurance. Check to make sure it covers you in the UK..if not, buy yourself some travel insurance..pretty cheap to cover you for your stay there. The UK medical insurance I have doesnt cover me in the US so check on that.
