One idea is to create shaded fire breaks to help minimize the CO2 released by forest fires. The undergrowth can be made into wood chips, and used as a renewable fuel to replace coal.
Green, renewable building technology to reduce energy consumption.
Inexpensive solar hot water heaters.

In some cases, engineers can be fixed by engineering. Any problem can have engineering techniques and problem solving applied. Some are worth the effort while others are not. I personally don't care about more ways to use a pencil to write. I don't care about mechanical television except as a curiosity. There are other examples.
I do care about surgery techniques and tools. I do care about methods to monitor a person's physical well being. I do care about technologies which are put into my vehicle. I can't personally contribute, but I still care.

Almost all materialistic things in the world can be fixed by engineering. Only human emotions and other problems like love, jealous, etc. can not be fixed by engineering.
