If your credit is in really terrible shape, you may want to refrain from applying for any additional credit right now, especially if you are continually getting denied. You may want to wait until the negative accounts get older, so they have less of an impact on your rating, allowing you to re-establish good credit.
Once your credit situation improves, you can rebuild credit by applying for a secured credit card or taking out a small loan with a co-signer until you prove your "credibility" again.

you need to rebuild your credit history.
assuming you have no debt now, so you are not going to miss payments and make it worse, i suggest you get a "pre-paid" credit card. Capital One do one. it comes with a crappy interest rate (about 30%) it comes with a crappy credit limit (about £200) and you have to pay them a guarentee (I had to pay £200 up front)....
BUT....
you use it every month to purchase petrol or shopping or something and then you PAY IT OFF WITHOUT FAIL, preferable early every month. After about 8 months you will have started to repair your credit history.
I know, I did it last year and I came out of a bankruptcy the year before that, and you dont get a much worse credit histroy than that.

if you have a bad credit, you should apply for bad credit or no credit. once you get one of those, then you can apply for others as well. Now I know a really good website you can go and apply for a credit card.I'm sure you can get one! It's: http://links.ncsreporting.com/redirect.aspx?cr=303231&of=417&af=122780&ac=100
Good luck.
