Not all christians are happy with the cross as a symbol of their belief system. Some branches of mormonism do not use the cross at all (LDS). And crosses have been found prevalent in many other aspects of spirituality. The circle with a cross inside of it (separating the circle equally) is an important symbol in hermetic magick.

Christ did challenge us to pick up our cross and follow him. For us it is a symbol of sacrifice and salvation.
I suppose that escapes all the people who ask variations on this question daily.
