How you break up depends on what he is like. Does he get violent? Is he super manipulative and will try to talk you out of it? If either of those are true, you are better off to break up in a way that does not involve you being physically present so he can hurt you or change your mind. In this case, I would prefer a phone call over email (that way you make sure he gets the message) and make sure to protect yourself (stay at someone's house for awhile, notify police) if he is violent. AND, if you REALLY want to break up (not just manipulate him to change, which is impossible) you do not have to go into great detail.. give him a few examples and tell him it's over. Thinking you will still be friends is fooling yourself. Some people can be friends after a breakup, but it takes time to heal wounds first before a friendship can be possible. AND, if he is violent or manipulative, do your really want to be friends?????

That said, if he is not violent or manipulative, do the breakup in person. It is classier and braver to do it that way. Be strong, keep it brief, and meet at a neutral location (a quiet bar, coffee house- somewhere public).

Good luck!!

hey there i really dont think breakin up via email is a good idea at all , that is something i think you need to do in person .What might help however is writing him a letter anyway , print it and when you see him and break the news give it to him so you make sure all of your points were covered . If you want to keep him as a friend , be gentle and cautious of what you say , some things you just cant take back.
good luck

You want to keep his friendship? Here's a tip. Don't do it! Don't break up over email. It's cowardly and doesn't earn you any respect. If you want to salvage a friendship from this relationship, talk to him in person. Try to explain how you feel, and don't give him the "I want to be friends" line. If you two remain friends, great. But don't push it, especially not at first. Good luck!

You said your relationship was going well, then you said that he was flirting, but you also said you're flirting. Sounds like there's more going on than you mention.

If you want to break up, don't do it over e-mail. A break up requires a face-to-face, particularly if you need to talk about why these things are happening.

Like everyone else has said, e-mail's not the way I would go. If you absolutely don't want to talk to him in person or on the phone, then at least give him a hand-written letter. Don't lash out at him, try to be patient and honest. Make sure that he KNOWS that you want to remain friends.

If he is important enough to you to keep his friendship, then he should be important enough to break up with in person. But first ask yourself, do I really want to be friends with a guy who isn't emotionally confident enough to allow me to speak with other guys? Do some soul searching and you might find that the answer is no.

Well, I wouldn't break up with him in an email, one thats for people who are scared to see how they react. Two if he was flirting with other girls do you want to be friends with him. I think you should tell him face-to-face.

U won't keep a friendship if you take cowards way out and do it by e-mail. If your breaking up over something so petty your immature...so be mature and do it face to face

Only people with no class break up by email, text messages, or even the telephone. If you are going to break up with someone, have the decency to do it in person.
