If taking his oath of office with his hand on a book he considers holy will make the moment more solemn and meaningful for Congressman-elect Ellison, then I'm all for it. It's important to remember, though, that it isn't what he swears on that is important, it's what he swears TO and whether he keeps that oath. He's swearing the same oath as all the other new members of the House of Representatives. Now let's watch to see whether they follow through on that promise to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic" and to "well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office" to which they have been elected.

I do too but keep this in mind, freedom is NOT free.We all need to remember this when some of us on here crap all over our country and government.Could a christian lawmaker swear on a bible in any muslim country?Could he even be elected??Notice I did not say she.Women have little or no rights in the middle east. Many people too easily forget what we had to go through as a country to have the freedoms we now have.We should not take them for granted nor should we forget the sacrifice made by those who came before us and those now here who are fighting to keep our freedoms.God Bless America!!!

they do no longer take oaths on holy books. this could be a non starter. " while he's sworn in as a member of the single hundred and 10th U.S. Congress on Jan. 4, 2007, Congressman-choose for Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) won't take the oath of place of work together with his hand on a replica of the Koran - or the different e book, in accordance to a spokesman for Ellison, the 1st Muslim ever elected to the domicile of Representatives. Ellison won't use any e book throughout the time of the ceremony, Dave Colling, who served with the aid of fact the Minnesota Democrat’s marketing campaign supervisor, informed Cybercast information provider. “Neither will the different member of the domicile,” Colling further, considering the fact that “no person has ever taken the oath of place of work in Congress with a Bible, a Koran, a Torah or something.” fairly, the participants of the chamber are sworn into place of work as a team, Colling observed. “all of them strengthen their genuine palms and repeat the oath that’s prescribed interior the form.”

I agree with you. If Keith Ellison is a serious, dedicated, devout Muslim, it makes for sense for him to swear on the Koran rather than on the Bible, which book would mean less to him.

I'm a Christian and I don't believe in Islam, but I believe in a person's right to practice Islam in a respectful and peaceful way.

It's great! And to all the naysayers out there, he will take the Oath on Thomas Jefferson's own of the Quran. How much more patriotic can you get?

Yeah! Only if folks from other religions could enjoy the same freedom of speech and religion in other Islamic countries.
Is it possible?

I think if he is a Muslim then swearing on the Quran would be logical as he is not Christian and the bible would not mean as much to him.
Yes it is good that they have not taken all our God given rights away as they have in other countries. They are tramping on the rights of privacy and such though.

Technically he doesn't swear in on anything, nobody does.

The ceremony that he was referring to is strictly for a photo and doesn't really represent freedom of speech. Heck if I wanted to I could swear in on Lord of The Rings in that photo and they wouldn't care because that's only a photo op.

I am a Fundamental Christian but I think that if the Quran is what this man believes in then it is right for him to swear on the Quran. For him to swear on the Bible would be for him to swear on a book he doesn't believe in....it might as well be the Betty Crocker Cook Book if he doesn't believe in it. The vow means NOTHING if the person doesn't believe in the book they are swearing on.

And how much could you trust an oath sworn on a book that is meaningless to him? What about an Atheist who will not swear on any superstitionist book?
