I borrowed a broach for my wedding, and when I went to return it the person I borrowed it from said it was for me to keep.
Is it bad luck to accept it?
I did only borrow it!
Though it was given to me after the wedding, so I don't think it's bad luck!!

Why would that bring on "bad luck"?

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue... is just for fun... you might have only had three of the four, two of the four, or even one of the four.... that would not mean the marriage was doomed from the get go.

Say, thank you and wear it proudly and remember the person who gave it to you... and when your daughter gets married... or soon to be daughter in law... you can give it to them. Make this passing broach a tradition so to say in the hand me down items for weddings. :o)

I think that you've answered your own question. Though it was given to you after your wedding day, at the time of your wedding it was "borrowed", then you should graciously accept it as a wedding gift.
The full rhyme is Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Silver Sixpence in her Shoe. It originated in Victorian times. 'Something Old' signifies that the couple's friends will stay with them. In one version of the tradition the 'Something Old' was an old garter given to the bride by a happily married woman to pass along a happy marriage to the couple. 'Something New' looks to the future for health, happiness and success. 'Something Borrowed' is an opportunity for the bride's family to give her something as a token of their love (but it must be returned to ensure good luck), and 'Something Blue' is thought to be lucky because blue represents fidelity and constancy. The custom began in ancient Israel where brides wore a blue ribbon in their hair to symbolize their fidelity. A sixpence was placed in the shoe to bring the couple wealth in their married life. Some brides still place a penny in their shoe during the marriage ceremony. There are numerous superstitious beliefs but I'm not a follower and I hope that you aren't one either.

It is not bad luck! It was borrowed at the time of the wedding...so when it was given to you...it does not count!

I'll do one better....my something borrowed was a string of REAL pearls my mom loaned me. After the wedding when I was taking it off the string broke and little pearls went all over the place and some went into places I couldn't retrieve them from. When I told my mom she said, "Don't worry about it....I don't wear them any way." But I didn't have any bad luck on account of it.

No I would not worry The tradition is cute but I do not think it would be bad luck to keep it You thought you were borrowing it when you got married It does not matter now.

Well, you got it with the intention of borrowing it so I do not think it would be bad luck at all! What a nice gesture! Congrats on the wedding!

As long as you are going along with the superstition...your original intent was borrowing...after borrowing it was given as a gift so you should be covered. (Personally I think you make your own luck but each to his own).
