For most destinations you must have 6 months left on your passport from the return date (not the day you leave). Some countries will allow you to travel with less than that left but it's best to check.

Some countries require up to 6 months validity from the date of entry into the country. Some other embassies are picky about the number of blank pages remaining.
The best advice is to simply get the passport renewed and not worry about its expiration.

Just got my passport renewed it would have ran out on Feb3rd but renewed it on Dec 5th they add on the extra time so my new passport is valid until Feb 3rd 2017 not Dec 5th 2017 hope this helps you make a decision.
I don't know about the 6months but a lot of places look for a minimum of 3 months

yes you are right in a way a lot of countries request you have 6 months validity upon your return to the uk you can apply for a new passport upto 10 months before expiry and they will honour you a new one for 10 yrs and 10 months , a new passport will soon involve an interview so i suggest you get one now ... happy travels

Pretty certain that is right, you need to get a new one. My mum has just renewed hers, she had 6 months left on it, and they have added the 6 months onto the new passport.
A lot of countries won't accept you. If you are going somewhere specific, check with the embassy for peace of mind.

Certain countries require a defined amount of time left before expiry on a passport before they will allow entry, you need to check with the countries you are planning to visit, its usually included with the visa requirements.

Yes, many countries will not let you in if your passport has less than six months left on your departure date from their country, I went to Shri Lanka and had to quickly renew mine as it would have had less than six months left two days before my departure date, bit of a panic!

Depends on where you are travelling to ! if you are going around spain then you are ok just as long as it is valid on your return date !
Ring the passport advice line on 0870 521 0410 and listen to to the recorded message it will tell you that it is still valid in europe ( it has a list of country`s that it`s ok to travel to ) as long as it is valid on your return date !
